Welcome to the RWWS local history book resource lists. This latest addition to RWWS' resources is designed to provide RWWS readers, (and especially those individuals with a penchant for Windsor's in-depth history) with a central location from which they are able to see at a glance some known sources of privately-owned, rare and hard-to-find copies of local books, dealing with the history.

There are not many references to the Crier in Windsor’s history books. However some authors have picked out events where the crier is mentioned.

For example John Stoughton in “Windsor: A History and Description of the Castle and the Town” reports that in the later 17th Century the Crier was paid 2 shillings by the corporation of Windsor.

Windsor Castle is the oldest occupied castle in the world, but it’s even more than that. As Deborah tells me in this episode of History Fan Girl, the grounds of Windsor Castle are 13 acres, so it has the feel of a town.

But it’s also a private residence and a window into 1, years of British history. *Includes contemporary accounts of Windsor Castle *Includes online resources and a bibliography for further reading “We think of medieval England as being a place of unbelievable cruelty and darkness and superstition.

We think of it as all being about fair maidens in castles, and witch-burning, and a belief that the world was flat.4/5(9). Windsor Castle is noted in the Domesday Book under the entry for Clewer, the neighbouring manor to Windsor.

Although this might seem strange, it occurred because plans for the castle had changed sinceand more land had been acquired in Clewer on which to site a castle town.

This plan was not actioned until the early 12th y: England. "From "Windsor Castle, with a description of the park, town and neighbourhood" by W.J. Loftie, And there is also: History of the County of Berkshire Vol.

3 has the following reference for the Curfew (Clewer) Tower's passage; the only other reference to a sallyport in the book is further round the castle.

THE HISTORY OF WINDSOR - LL ; p map of neighbourhood of Windsor c A SUMMER'S DAY IN WINDSOR - EDWARD JESSE ; frontispiece plan of Windsor Castle by Wyattville c ANNALS OF WINDSOR (2 VOLS) - .The book or guide was in excellent condition.

A lot of great information on the beginning history up to the present history of the castle, its royal inhabitants, its additions, uses and artwork, etc. Provides great pictures of various rooms throughout the castle and their uses. A must for the royal collector/5(22). This is from Annals of Windsor by R.R Tighe and J.

E. Davis - it's out of copyright and on Google Book Search in complete form. I imagine thamesweb and others may know of it already, but for those who don't it makes an interesting read about Windsor before the usual Victorian resources.
